Water leaks from compressors are common, but they cannot be ignored as it can damage your compressed air system and jeopardize the quality of your final product.
The amount of water produced by an air compressor is largely dependent on the ambient air quality and pressure in a given environment. Air temperature, humidity, compressor size and required pressure will determine the amount of water coming out of the unit and possibly entering the compressed air piping. Hot, humid air has a higher moisture content than cold air, which will cause more water to come out of the compressor.
So how to remove the moisture in the compressed air?
1. Increase the pressure to a level above the desired compressed air pressure. At higher pressures, water droplets are removed. In the next step, reduce the pressure to the desired compressed air pressure. From this stage, only water vapor is present in the compressed air as the relative humidity drops below 100%.
2. Because the compressed air is cooled to a lower temperature. At this lower temperature, the relative humidity exceeds 100%, and water droplets form. Those water droplets are collected and removed. In the next step, the temperature of the compressed air is raised again. From this stage, once the relative humidity drops below 100%, only water vapor is present in the compressed air.
3. Chemical drying
In this method, moisture is removed by means of absorbent or adsorptive substances. By absorption, moisture is absorbed in a hygroscopic liquid or powder. Moisture adheres to this material and needs to be removed and replaced with new material for further manipulation. By adsorption, moisture is captured by hygroscopic materials.
4. Moisture molecules are transported into the pores by diffusion and accumulated by physical combination. In this case, when the beads become saturated, they must be regenerated before adsorption can begin again. Regeneration can be accomplished by heating the beads or by blowing dry air over the beads. In both cases, the water retention is destroyed and the water molecules are removed.
